Artist Titus Kaphar creates oil-on-canvas prints of European and American portraits from the 18th and 19th
centuries and reworks them in narrative ways to encourage
a completely new dialogue. "His work is at once beautiful
and halting as he dances between fictional narrative and
history,” notes the Seattle Art Museum. Here, the canvas
has been shredded to create Martyr (oil on linen, 2008).
