I see a building and I want to paint it black...

I love the facade of Stable Cafe in San Francisco. The trim and everything -- all painted black.

A Tribute...

So much of my design style can be attributed to my mother Patricia and grandmother Lillie. Whether it was my grandmother's love of flowers or my mother's affinity for painted furniture and antique quilts — I see how their influences have shaped my love of design and all things that make a house a home. My grandmother passed away many years ago, but my memories of her are still so strong in my mind — especially this time of year. Shortly after Thanksgiving, she would always call on me to come help decorate her house for Christmas. Not because she needed the help, but because she knew how much I loved it. The ruralist aspects of my design style are definitely inherited from my mother. Worn woods, distressed painted finishes, candle light, and layers of homespun textiles — all are passions for her. I took the time yesterday to truly reflect on all that I am thankful for. To everyone that loves and supports me, I am sincerely grateful. I am blessed with a partner whose unconditional love often seems heroic to me. I am blessed with a family that always keeps things interesting. And I am blessed that these two beautiful women have made me the man I am today.

Douglas Friedman's Home...

Dreamy photographer Douglas Friedman has shot interiors for Elle Decor, Wallpaper, and Domino. A little taxidermy, an eclectic art collection, flea market finds, and hand-picked antiques show that Douglas has plenty of style of his own to show off.

Everyday objects...

... become stellar when grouped together in an eyecatching display.

Digging deep...

Digging deep tonight, looking for holiday inspirations. This image pretty much sums up what I hope to create this season -- relaxed, humble, and natural elements all the way. Of course I will layer in some vintage too. I'm looking forward to sharing it all during our annual Christmas Open House on Saturday, December 3rd.

Inspired by boats...

If I had a boat, I would sail to you / hold you in my arms, ask you to be true / Once I had a dream, it died long before / Now I'm pointed north, hoping for the shore. -- James Vincent McMorrow

Wild arrangement...

Overdone, fussy floral arrangements have never been a favorite of mine. Needless to say, I love this wild arrangement.

Lived in...

I especially enjoy interiors styled with a true, lived-in-look in mind. It makes you wonder if they've been styled at all.
