A Little Halloween Eeriness...

Two vintage photographs — found at different times and

in different states. On top of that, he even looks a little

like Ichabod Crane.

Legitimate Original: Federico de Vera...

Legendary curator of all things beautiful, Federico de Vera

has appointed his home with a curious eye and

and an expert hand. Here, a 1940's military cabinet

becomes a functional storage chest.

Growing up in the Philippines in a Catholic family has

definitely influenced his aesthetic. Watching over a steel

cabinet filled with glass, stands a handsome Spanish saint (c. 1700).

Diego, Federico's pet Chihuahua, perches in the living room.

The iron daybed is covered in silk velvet and vintage ikats.
Federico created this stunning light fixture from
Tibetan altar cloths.

A wooden statue haunts the entryway.

An antique mirror beautifully devours the wall above

the master bathtub. A Tanzu chest sits beneath

the sink for added storage.

Where to begin? Features on Ilse Crawford

and Anna Spiro of Absolutely Beautiful Things

are just a couple of highlights. Then there is the

Bucks County, Pennsylvania home of

Richard Ferretti and James Gager.

Last, but certainly not least, is Axel Vervoordt's

Swiss chalet. Much more is packed into this

fantastic issue. I'm gonna go get busy

with some scanning so I can share some of

my favorite images. How will I ever narrow

it all down to a single post?

Crate-inspired...

Opinions?

NVR vignette...

One of my favorite nooks in the shop

includes this wonderful collection of

NVR finds. The vintage osteology chart

just sold, so now I am trying to decide

what should take its place above that

functional little factory table (notice

the jute twine laced up the leg). On top,

an ariculated lamp clamps onto the corner,

a cloche collects a group of antique shoe forms,

and an abacus is ready to perform some arithmetic.

Below, a burlap covered trunk holds a vintage

file box and a boxed collection of correspondence

between Mr. Justice Holmes and Sir Frederick Pollock

(1874-1932). Linen curtains accented with

quilted chocolate velvet frame the scene.

Just a peek...

Everyone is always asking about my own living space.

Well, here is a little peek into our bedroom. An ebonized

Mandarin sofa sits at the foot of our iron bed. A pair

of reclaimed wood cocktail tables hold whatever we're

reading at the moment. Beneath it all,

a houndstooth-patterned sisal rug sits on

Saddle Leather painted floors. The bedding is

Belgian Linen from Restoration Hardware, and

the Ikat window panels are from West Elm. The bedside

tables were once a farmhouse breakfast table.

We simply just cut in half to create the two tables.

Our den is all about simplicity and comfort. I love the

unexpected details like the vintage boat anchor resting

on the reclaimed wood table. On the mantle we have

displayed a collection of vintage shoe forms — and antique

ship blueprints hang over the linen tufted sofa.

The wooden balustrade lamps are from Arteriors.

The wall color in both spaces is Raccoon Hollow

by Benjamin Moore.

Cool Vintage Finds...

Check out this vintage handpainted Indian Motorcycle

advertisement. Pretty cool, huh? I think the antique

boxing gloves are a nice touch as well. This could take

some lucky gentleman's "man cave" to a whole new level.

West Elm's Bengal Tiger Dhurrie...

Talking about a lot of bang for you buck —

West Elm's Bengal Tiger Dhurrie certainly

fits the bill. Here, my friend Pam has used

the rug in her sitting room/study.

Another view of Pam's space shows how talented she

is with mixing patterns and textures.

Unstructured Slipcovers...

Loose slipcovers are my latest obsession.

Here, stylist Peter Frank used vintage

French linen sheets to create his unstructured

masterpiece. Canvas painter's drop cloths

are a budget-friendly alternative that work

like a dream.

Just Around the Corner...

Here are a few upcoming finds headed to

Finderskeepers Market. This hemp-textured linen

Jersey Wide Club Chair is a favorite of mine.

Based on its exposure to the elements, our unfinished

Ash Table will take on the look of an antique

potting table found at a flea market.

I love the simplicity of this reclaimed wood

and metal console.

Rustic in every way, the Plzen Chest is an eclectic find.

Recycled wood + industrial elements = The Luca Dining Table.

I love those casters!

Billy Reid...

Whether it is his home, his clothing, or his

retail spaces — fashion designer Billy Reid is a

classic through and through. With a laid-back mix

of new and vintage items, the Reids have put their

own spin on true Southern style. Here, a 19th-century

English sideboard holds a collection of plates

in their Alabama home.

The Reids repurposed salvage from the renovation

of their house to put their unique trademark

on the kitchen's details. Bricks from the basement
are now a backsplash — and the sink rests comfortably

in an old gardening table.

A collection of teacups are displayed inside

an old bun warmer.
Antique linens, a barley table, and an old
shaving bowl create a fantastic sink in one
of the home's bathrooms.
The extra-long tub is original to the house,
and the plates above it are from Billy's grandmother.
Some have described Reid's classic American design
aesthetic as "southern luxury." He describes it as
"Southern preppy meets workwear junkie meets
East Village folk." However you describe it, the
point of the matter is that Reid knows his clothes.
In fact, Reid was was recently awarded the 2010
GQ/CFDA Best New Menswear Designer in America.

A few of my favorites include these black Kentwood Loggers.

Distressed cordovan is the highlight of the Airy Hat.

100% Camel Hair Carcoat — a classic indeed.

Billy Reid simply defines easy, classic menswear.
